The Perfect Summer Read

I have have recently finished one of my favorite reads all year. The House of Cerulean Sea is a wonderful book, that includes magic, found family and a sweet gay romance. This book was enjoyable and entertaining but contained nothing that felt overwhelming. The story, though rather simple, felt like a big hug. Perfect summer read when your not in the mood for something to heavy but not just a boring rom com either.

Linus Baker is a lonely middle aged man who lives in the city, he has a rather boring and uninteresting job. He works at DICOMY, which deals with the youth of magical children. Linus is a caseworker who gets assigned a stop secret job to go and observe an orphanage. Linus starts off as a grumpy character but as the story continues he begins to have feelings for the master of the orphanage(Arthur). Linus becomes carefree and learns that rules aren't the most important thing in life. The children that live in the orphanage are considered... abnormal, even in the magic community. One of the children (Lucy)is even the son of the devil himself. And although Linus is very hesitant to interact with these children, he learns that they are after all just...children. Linus begins to feel more at home there than he does in his actual house.

The House of the Cerulean, shines a light on gay romance, in the most sweet way possible. I loved watching Arthur's and Linus's relationship develop. Linus is at first very hesitant to have any kind of relationship with anyone in the island because his against his job description, but Arthur is less subtle about his feelings for Linus. The children, although they are young, they sense that there is something going on between Linus and Arthur, and are very upset and disappointed when Linus has to go back home after he is finished observing the home. Though it's not long before Linus sees that he doesn't belong in the city.

The future of the Orphanage rests on Linus's shoulders, he is the one to decide if it shall be closed down or not. Many things throw off Linus on the path of his reports, and he learns that sometimes, things aren't always what the seem. The longer Linus stays on the island, the more he sees the beauty of the children and the amazing life they life under the influence of Arthur. Linus grows so much as a character and helps the other children on the island grow as well. Linus slowly understands that kindness and grace must be granted to these children, and that Arthur guides these children in the best way possible. Linus ultimately decides not only to keep to the orphanage open, but live how he wants to with the people he loves(Arthur and the children on the island).
